March 1st is the first day of spring! After a dreary winter, we finally can start looking forward to longer days warmer nights, and blooming flowers in the not too distant future. Most homeowners batten down the hatches and prep their homes for winter. Spring is a time for renewal and reset. As you start your spring cleaning checklist, here are a few ways you can prep your home for the new season.

Clean the Gutters

This winter we’ve seen our fair share of rain and flittering snowflakes. The high winds that usually accompany this kind of weather can shake leaves and other debris free from surrounding trees. When it lands on your room, this debris can lead to build-ups in your gutters that can cause damage to your roof if left unchecked.

Hopefully, you’ve been able to take a look up there a few times this winter to make sure that nothing builds up too bad. In any case, taking the time to climb up the roof and clean out those gutters is a great first step to readying your home for nicer days ahead.

Check Pipe Insulation for Condensation

In many homes, exposed water or sewage pipes aren’t always located in climate controlled areas. During the winter months it’s advised to insulate exposed pipes. This is for good reason. Insulating your pipes provides an extra lay of protection again cold, keeping your pipes from freezing or bursting during a cold snap.

In warmer weather, water pipe insulation is also important for protecting your pipes from damaging condensation. As temperatures rise, condensation that accumulates on your pipes due to humidity can lead to corrosion and rust. This condensation can also lead to the growth of mold, posing health risks to your and your families.  As we head into spring and summer, check up on your insulation to make sure all is well.

If you find an issue with mold or mildew while checking your pipe insulation, give our team a call. We specialize in mold remediation. While there are method for removing mold yourself, oftentimes these DIY projects either aren’t able to fully remove the mold, or they come at the risk of your own health.

Prevent Fires: Check for Debris

As we get closer to BBQ season, it’s important to take time to ensure there isn’t any flammable debris that could easily catch. Wood, furniture, and other objects could act as a path for fire to travel along if given the chance.

While grilling, make sure to stay at least 25 feet from the main house as to avoid the potential of the house catching fire.
